At just 12 years old, Mindy Gohr knew what she wanted to do for the rest of her life.

“I was watching a pastry chef on The Food Network,” she recalls, “and I thought, ‘That’s a job?’ I knew right then what my future would be.”

She attended Chicago’s Le Cordon Bleu and got a dream externship at Bittersweet Pastry Shop and Cafe under the tutelage of founder and award-winning pastry chef Judy Contino.

Mindy dug in with gusto. She was a cake builder. Lead decorator. Kitchen manager. Pastry chef. But she didn’t see herself as the owner...yet.

It was Judy who approached Mindy with an idea: buy the bakery with Judy’s niece, Esther Griego. Carry on the legacy. Make it her own.

“I didn’t realize it in my head, but I knew it in my heart; I was ready,” says Mindy. “My family had confidence in me. I have a strong work ethic and never-give-up attitude. And I had my financial advisor, Sherrie VanKoevering, at my side for every step, helping me to get ready personally and professionally.”

Mindy and Esther are realizing their vision for their business, their employees and their future.

Mindy, a determined saver, has worked with Financial Advisor Sherrie VanKoevering for years. Together with Esther, they implemented integrated solutions designed to secure Mindy and Esther’s financial future, handle employee benefits, and achieve short- and long-term goals, all while owning a business.

“Sherrie helps us make good decisions,” Mindy says. “I feel that she cares as much about this business as I do, and has identified the solutions we need for both protection and growth.”

“Sherrie helps us make good decisions. She cares as much about this business as I do.”

Mindy is the baker, Esther is the marketer and Sherrie is behind the scenes, ensuring that every financial question is answered, every scenario considered. They talk a lot.

“I am confident in our future because of the people around us who support us, who help us grow,” says Mindy. “We are working with the right people to maintain the legacy of this bakery while creating a successful and colorful future for ourselves, our employees and this city. We are focused on planning for today while dreaming about tomorrow, where we want to take this business and our lives.”
